Jill and Mandy are two teens who could hardly be more different. Jill has a mother and a boyfriend who care about her, a comfortable home, and a tough-girl attitude. Mandy has almost no stability in her life, a mother in name only, no friends, and she’s naive. But both have significant problems. Jill’s father died less than a year ago, and it has knocked Jill and all of her relationships out of whack. And Mandy is pregnant. Through an internet connection, Jill’s mother promises to adopt Mandy’s baby and invites Mandy to live with them during the last of her pregnancy. A series of complications ensue from this arrangement, all of which are carried out with the kind of emotional accuracy that Sara Zarr is known for. The story alternates between Mandy’s and Jill’s points of view, showing both girls struggling with their own failings and their unmet needs. Sara Zarr, as usual, develops many-dimensional teen characters with specific personalities, all the while striking a universal “every teen” note with each one. This book offers a realistic and honest look at teen pregnancy, without glamorizing the difficulties and emotions. For grades 9 and up.
