Pronounce This!

Have you ever wondered how to pronounce a name, or any word for that matter? Well, I happened upon this discussion posted by Katherine Kellgren, a wonderful audiobook narrator, at Audiobook Community, which lists several resources for pronunciations. Here's the list, plus a few more:

Forvo
Howjsay.com
International Dialects of English Archive developed for actors and actresses
Inogolo English Pronunciation Guide to the Names of People, Places, and Stuff with links to pronunciation guides for other languages.
Say How? from the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS)

Additionally, an audio pronunciation component is included in many online dictionaries, such as www.merriam-webster.com or dictionary.com. Check to see if your personal favorite has this feature.

Mango - Learn a Language!

Wright Library is pleased to offer an information session on its newest database, Mango Languages, on Sunday, September 19 at 2 p.m. Mango Languages is an online language learning system that teaches real conversation skills for practical communication. The system is completely web-based and remotely accessible, so you can learn anywhere you have an Internet connection.

This demonstration program will take place in the library meeting room. Advanced registration is not required.

Mango Languages

Wright Library is now offering a new online language learning resource to our patrons. Mango Languages teaches real conversation skills for practical communication. Through fun and engaging interactive lessons, Mango makes learning a new language fast, easy and incredibly effective.

The system is completely web-based and remotely accessible, so you can learn anywhere you have an Internet connection. As you listen to and repeat after native speakers, you'll learn more than just words and phrases. You’ll learn how those pieces can be rearranged and combined to make new thoughts, new conversations, and even more practical communication! In no time at all, you'll be able to navigate all sorts of everyday situations — get directions, order a meal, make new friends — the possibilities are endless!

Ask a reference librarian for help getting started using Mango Languages. A training program will be offered in September. Watch Wright Library's Web site for details.
