Supreme Decisions
The final date of the current session of the Supreme Court is June 28.  Significant opinions are being handed down, including one on immigration yesterday and one on the Affordable Care Act (healthcare legislation) anticipated for Thursday.  Understanding these rulings can be helped by an understanding of the Court, its role in government, and how it works.  The resources below should help with that understanding as well as provide information and analysis on the Court decisions.

Ohio Here to Help
There is a new Web site that brings helpful Ohio resources together in one place.  Ohio Here to Help was designed by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services to help Ohio's unemployed workers learn more about the many programs and resources available to them, from both the government and the private sector.

Ohio Here to Help provides direct links to job openings via OhioMeansJobs.com, as well as to training and education resources, such as LearningExpressLibrary, via the State of Ohio Library.  It also has information on such topics as money, food assistance, health care, housing, transportation, child care, veterans’ services, legal services, clothing assistance, youth employment and much more.

SEPTEMBER 23, 2009
Health Care Reform Bill

Health care reform is a big issue with new legislation proposed in both houses of Congress.  A review copy of H.R. 3200 America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009, the health care reform bill from the U.S. House of Representatives, is available at Wright Library.  Those interested in reading the bill will find it in three binders on the shelf behind the Reference Desk.

The text of the bill is also available online from the Government Printing Office or OpenCongress.org, where comments are already being made on the proposed legislation.  You can also participate in the League of Women Voters sponsored Health Care Reform:  The Big Read to get a better understanding of what is included in the bill and what it may mean for you.

UPDATE (10/5/09):  Since the date of this post the Senate Finance Committee has released America's Healthy Future Act, it's version of a health care reform bill.

Also currently on the shelf behind the Reference Desk are these new reference books:

OCTOBER 1, 2007
Homestead Exemption
Today, October 1, 2007, is the deadline for applying for the Homestead Exemption property tax relief credit.  If you have missed it, don't worry, you can still receive the credit by applying in 2008.

The Homestead Exemption
provides property tax relief to qualified senior citizens and permanently and totally disabled Ohioans. It takes the form of a credit on your property tax bills.  A new law has expanded eligibility.

According to the Ohio Department of Taxation Web site, taxpayers who miss the 2007 filing deadline may still claim the credit for property taxes to be paid in 2008, but must wait until 2008 to apply.

Those who miss the deadline will need to file a late application for the missed tax year at the same time they file a timely application in 2008. The first day to file the application in 2008 is January 8, 2008; the last day is June 2, 2008.

Applications are available online from the Ohio Department of Taxation and the Montgomery County Auditor's Office.  Look for new forms in 2008.

Send applications to:
Karl L. Keith, Montgomery County Auditor
451 W. Third St.
Dayton OH 45422-1021
Attn: Homestead Dept.
