Olive Kitteridge is a novel told in thirteen stories, connected through the cantankerous and alarming Olive, a wife, mother and retired school teacher. She is an opinionated original, who makes anyone who contradicts her soon regret it. Appearing sometimes as the main character and sometimes just in the background, Olive witnesses and deplores each and every change happening in her coastal Maine community. The stories are easy to read and impossible to forget. The literary craft and emotional power will surprise readers new to Strout.
