Social (Networking) Etiquette

Social media is wonderful (and becoming ever more popular as this report indicates), because it allows people to connect with each other. The opportunites to develope relationships with other people, explore our interests, and even for businesses to distribute information are fantastic. Of course, how we conduct ourselves in such settings can make it much less fun.

Etiquette has developed an entirely separate branch to deal with social networking. Web sites are devoted to it, and even though we all "know" how we are supposed to conduct ourselves online, it is easy to slip up. Here are some reminders:

One important area that our conduct on social networks can impact is our work. Workplace ethics and social media is an area that is beginning to be studied as reported on in this Mashable article. The article refers to the National Business Ethics Survey, the latest version of which is one of the first to explore connections between social media and ethics.
