What are you reading? Want to talk about it?
Book discussions are a popular thing. There are people that like to talk about what they are reading.

Elizabethtown Public Library hosts many informal groups, one of which is a monthly Book Discussion Group. This fine group is led by Sue Bowser, former Director of Elizabethtown Public Library and current Manager of Adult Services at the Lancaster Public Library (Duke Street, Lancaster).

Here are some upcoming titles for the Book Discussion Group that meets on the third Saturday of each month at 9AM in the lovely Turret Room of Elizabethtown Public Library. Come in, have a cup of our delicious coffee and chat about books.

June 19               Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout
July 17                 Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson
August 12           The Help by Kathryn Stockett

Thanks to the Women of the Moose
Elizabethtown Public Library is a Community Library. People from the Greater Elizabethtown Area community meet here.

The Library provides vital services to help the community including public use computers for downloading and completing job applications,
school projects and applications.

People come together at the Library to help one another. On any given day people are tutoring or being tutored, picking out books and reading together in families.

Elizabethtown Public Library depends on its community for support.
The majority of the funding for this Community Library comes not from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, nor any other
government entity, but from the people of the Great State of Pennsylvania.

Thank you for your support. Thanks to the Women of the Moose Chapter #701 for their recent gift.

Browsing is a Good Thing
One of the benefits of working at Elizabethtown Public Library is being in a Library regularly. Even walking by the new books, I am drawn into the ideas presented in both fiction and non-fiction works. What are writing about? Is it someone or something I know anything about? Or is it a new idea or person for my brain to learn about?

The other day I was taking my break in the Library's Coffee Company, the part of the Library that also tastes good. I took a few moments to browse through a couple of magazines and I learned something in those few minutes that really helped me.

www.gethuman.com is a website to use to find a direct phone number to use when you want to avoid those pesky phone prompts at so many businesses. I tried it the next day and it worked. I got a phone number to call for Amazon.com that took me right to a person instead of their usual host of prompts and was so happy.

Take a moment and browse through the magazines or look at the new book (or music, movie, etc.) shelf and see what you learn to make your life a little better.

Need to Sharpen your Job Skills?

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Elizabethtown College Students in Free Enterprise and the Elizabethtown Public Library partner to present “Get Smart about Getting a Job”

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa Should we just sit back and let the current economic climate prohibit a person from attainting the career they deserve? Students in Elizabethtown College’s Students in Free Enterprise (EC SIFE) are taking the initiative to help members of the Elizabethtown community “get smart” about getting a job. In partnership with the Elizabethtown Public Library, the two groups developed “Get Smart about Getting a Job” – a seminar designed to teach essential resume and interviewing skills to people in the community.

The seminars will take place on two separate dates, Monday, October 19th and Wednesday, October 21 from 5:30-8:00 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Public Library. “The goal of this project is to help people help themselves,” said Project Coordinator Amy Smith, EC SIFE vice president and senior at the College. “We want to provide the tools they need to go out there and find a job.”

Each seminar will begin with a 45 minute lesson on resume writing followed by another 45 minute lesson on interviewing skills. After a short break, attendees will then participate in mock interviews, where thy will get to practice what they learned.

In addition, the seminars will feature two prominent professional guest speakers. Ms. Carolyn Haskell, director of human resources for Hershey North America at The Hershey Co. will focus on what employers are looking for during an interview. Her insight will allow attendees an edge in future interviews. Mr. Robert William, Director for International Student Services/Program Manager for BCA Study Abroad, will be providing tips on how to write a “winning” resume. His prior experiences include Executive Editor of Pennsylvania Labor-Management News, Career Development Specialist at the Harrisburg Area Community College, and Managing Editor for Pennsylvania Career Guide.

Sign-ups will begin Wednesday, September 23 at the Elizabethtown Public Library and by e-mailing SIFE@etown.edu. This event is free to the public and there is limited seating: attendees will be determined on a first come, first serve basis. Everyone in the community as well as from Elizabethtown College is welcome to attend. For more information please contact EC SIFE at SIFE@etown.edu or the Elizabethtown Public Library at (717) 367-7467.
The College and EC SIFE

Located in southeaster Pennsylvania, Elizabethtown College offers its 1990 students more than 50 academic programs in the liberal arts, sciences and professional studies. The college’s motto is “Educate for Service,” which is put into action daily by the students, faculty and staff. One of the school’s larger on-campus organizations is EC SIFE. EC SIFE’s mission is to identify the economic needs of the local, national, and international communities and respond with innovative, educational programs that make a sustainable impact.

Grace Goes to Prison

On Thursday, October 29, at 7PM, Elizabethtown author Melanie G. Snyder will talk about restorative justice and her new book, Grace Goes to Prison, at the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 South Market St, Elizabethtown.

Grace Goes to Prison, just released by Brethren Press (www.brethrenpress.com), is the true story of Pennsylvania native Marie Hamilton and her three decades as a volunteer in Pennsylvania’s state prisons. Ms. Hamilton’s volunteer work in the prisons has challenged conventional wisdom about how to deal with criminals. She’s had no formal education in criminal justice, she isn’t part of the “system,” yet her programs have become an integral part of Pennsylvania’s prison system.

Those programs include the Pennsylvania Prison Runathon, a charity runathon held each year behind prison walls, where inmates run laps to raise money to benefit at-risk youth. To date, Pennsylvania’s inmates have raised over $250,000 to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters through the Pennsylvania Prison Runathon. Another program started by Ms. Hamilton is Project Restore, which teaches job skills and social skills to prison inmates as they learn to repair and refinish furniture and household appliances, keeping over 70 tons of these items out of Pennsylvania’s landfills every year.

The research, writing and publication of Grace Goes to Prison took two years, from Snyder’s initial interview with Ms. Hamilton through hundreds of additional interviews with current and former prison inmates, prison guards, wardens, judges and others. While Snyder has written non-fiction articles for over 80 newspapers and magazines across North America over the past decade, Grace Goes to Prison is her first book.

The book has received advance praise from Dr. Donald B. Kraybill, co-author of Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy and Senior Fellow at the Young Center at Elizabethtown College; Dr. Howard Zehr, Professor of Restorative Justice, Eastern Mennonite University; Kay Pranis, former Restorative Justice Planner for the Minnesota Department of Corrections, and others.
For more information about Melanie G. Snyder and the book, see her website at http://www.MelanieGSnyder.com
