Companion Books

Companion BooksTwo of the criteria I use to judge a book are whether or not it makes me want to (1) read more by that author or (2) read more on that subject. Number 1 can be a tricky proposition - we've all read books that have us anticipating the next offering by an author only to be sorely disappointed. Number 2 is perhaps a better measure of a book's success, at least with this reader. Years ago, after finishing Rosalind Laker's historical novel, To Dance with Kings, I read at least 10 other "companion" books about Versailles from the time of the Sun King to the French Revolution. Here are a few books I've enjoyed, along with some suggested companion reads.
