Bones

We have an average of 206 bones in our body. Without them we would just be a pile of soft floppy body parts laying on the floor. Here are some fascinating facts about our skeleton:

  • When we are born most of our skeleton is made of cartilage. This develops into bones as we grow into a child.
  • The bones of the human skeleton are stronger, size for weight, than almost any kind of wood or plastic.
  • About one person in 20 has an extra pair of ribs, making 13 pairs instead of 12.
  • The skeleton is 1/7 of your total body weight.
  • Bones make new blood cells at the rate of 3 million per second.
