Digestion

We eat food every day but have you ever thought about the journey that food takes through your body? Here are some interesting facts about digestion:

  • It takes 15 to 28 hours to digest food from start to finish.
  • The lining of your stomach makes about 3 pints of gastric juices each day. It also makes thick mucus to protect the stomach from being eaten by the gastric juices.
  • Food is pushed through your system by waves of muscle action called peristalsis. Peristalsis is so strong it works even if the body is upside down.
  • All of the villi, small finger like shapes about 1 mm long, from your small intestine joined end to end would stretch 248 miles.
