Thirteen years ago, in 1996, a group of students at the University of Virginia started the
Day of Silence. Student activists were silent for an entire day, bringing awareness to the problem of anti-LGBT harassment and bullying. Their efforts promoted a safe school environment for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Since then, the Day of Silence has become a national movement with participation at over 8,000 middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities.
