Lucky Day Collection in Libraries Aug. 1
Lucky Day

Found a penny? Spotted a double rainbow? Picked a four-leaf clover? Why not see if your lucky streak will continue at the library?

Our new Lucky Day collection puts hot items on our shelves for you to check out right now, including new releases, bestsellers and popular films! Stop by your local library and see what might be waiting there for you.

What You Need to Know

  • Lucky Day materials will be available on a first come, first serve basis.
  • Lucky Day items cannot be placed on hold or renewed.
  • You may only have three Lucky Day items checked out at any one time.
  • The same check-out period applies to Lucky Day items as regular materials from the catalog: three weeks for books, seven days for feature films.
  • Staff cannot place items aside for you to pick up.
  • If you check out a Lucky Day item and you have that item in the same format (book, DVD, audiobook) in your holds queue, you will need to remove it if you do not wish to check it out again.

Let us know what you were lucky enough to get your hands on! What are you hoping to get?

I don't understand! Will they be filed on the shelves where they fit re: Dewey? Will they be in a special display? Is it new publications? I just don't get it!

What a great idea! I swung by the library today and got a dvd that I was on hold for and then 2 great new books- one that has 298 people waiting for it! Thanks for this great idea!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sam said, on Aug. 1 at 2:43PM
Am I one of the 298 waiting? This doesn't seem fair. How can someone get a book without waiting that I have been waiting months for?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rebecca Winning said, on Aug. 1 at 3:41PM
Hi Shirlee, The Lucky Day Collection includes new releases of popular adult fiction and nonfiction, children’s and teen fiction and DVDs. They are housed in special display areas in prominent, high traffic locations in the libraries. You should stop by your local library and check it out. Look for the Lucky Day ladybug!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rebecca Winning said, on Aug. 1 at 3:43PM
Hey madlibz, We're glad you like it. Looks like you had a lucky day today!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rebecca Winning said, on Aug. 1 at 4:12PM
Hey Sam, I know it's hard to be stuck in a long holds queue. You may be able to reduce your wait times by trying your luck with this new collection. You can search the catalog to see if the item you want is on-shelf at a library near you. If it's available in the Lucky Day collection, you can go to the library, and -- if no one else beats you to it -- check it out immediately. You should stop by your library and check it out.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cazy Cat Lady said, on Aug. 2 at 9:59AM
I agree with Sam, it doesn't seem right to skip over people waiting patiently in line for an item, only to have someone else butt in ahead. I don't like the concept at all.

Crystal said, on Aug. 2 at 1:50PM
The Library is trying to get people to actually go into the building and look around instead of just doing everything online - walking in and walking out. Need more traffic. . Plus, you may find something else you want to check out. .

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SuziQ said, on Aug. 3 at 11:04AM
Not sure whether I like this or not since I have not been to the library to see the display yet. But I like the idea of playing beat the bank. Seems like a windfall of sorts if you have been on the wait list and you go into the library and voila there it is just for the taking. I look forward to trying it. Something new is always fun.

I had not heard about lucky day when I went to library and stumbled upon the display and was able to grab Mirror Mirror for my daughter. I have found the new releases have gotten out of control with the holds and the amount of people. It has usually come to redbox before it comes to my turn at the library. But lucky day items are non renewable, but so are all new items or any items if there is someone waiting for it, so it seems a little oddI am afraid that the display shelves going to be empty after the initial 2 weeks and everyone has checked items out.

even though I got one book that I was # 200 + on the wait list for I still feel this is unfair. there were several books on the shelf that I'm on hold for. I went to 2 different libraries and one had 5 copies of I, Michael Bennett and there are close to 300 people on hold for that book.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pam said, on Aug. 6 at 9:34AM
Thanks for this! I picked up The Fault In Our Stars. Is "Lucky Day" going to be a regular thing?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RWinning said, on Aug. 6 at 10:08AM
For those of you who are pretty far down in a holds queue, I just want to add one fact about the Lucky Day collection. The books we buy for Lucky Day are incremental to the books we normally buy -- so we're not "borrowing from Peter to pay Paul", so to speak. We'll still buy more popular titles for our regular collection when the holds-to-title ratio reaches a certain point, so you'll be getting the item as quickly as you normally would. The only change is that now, you might be able to find it on shelf in the library and skip the holds queue altogether, if you're lucky. ;-)

Deb said, on Aug. 6 at 12:39PM
I was really surprised and happy to walk into the library yesterday and find a book for which I'm about #150 on the waitlist. I understand why some may not like it, but I was prepared to wait until my #150 came up anyway. There are plenty of ther books to read in the interim. Now I'll quickly get it finished for the next person to enjoy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

RWinning said, on Aug. 6 at 1:41PM
Pam, Thanks for your comment. We're hoping Lucky Day will be a regular thing. We'll evaluate the program as we go, but we remain committed to meeting the growing demand for popular materials in our libraries.

I think this is a fantastic idea for getting more people into the library. I go in 2-3 times a week, but I frequently just pick up and drop off. I much prefer to look around and browse the shelves when I have the time. I'm excited to check it out next time I'm there. Congratulations to your "creative thinking" department!

I have Close Your Eyes by Iris Johansen on hold. Waiting for it to come to me while I see that there are 2 copies on the shelf at the Wheatridge Library and they have been there for almost a week. How does that seem fair? Must I go to the Wheatridge Library in order to get it and hope that it is still on the Lucky Day shelf when I arrive? If a book does not get checked out from the Lucky Day shelf, put it into the circulation for those who have holds.

I came in to pick up a Hold & right by the entrance I noticed a brand new edition book - The New Geography of Jobs - published 2012! Checked it out, read it & tried to renew but it was on hold, so I returned it. It's that simple & yes, it was my lucky day! Thanks.

Hi UNLUCKYDAY, We want to meet the growing demand for popular materials and know that being in line on a long holds list can be frustrating, which is part of the reason we started the Lucky Day collection. So you know, we still purchase additional materials for the regular collection when the holds queue reaches a certain point compared to the number of titles available. We’ll be evaluating the program as it moves forward and hope to improve what materials are available based on demand.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bethany said, on Aug. 14 at 4:07PM
Nice, Runaway Cow! Glad you lucked out!

Fun, innovative idea! Thanks for putting so much time and energy into a new idea that will make our libraries more fun. Although I understand the disappointment and frustrations of some patrons who are on wait lists I hope that you will receive many more thanks for the services you provide. I love visiting the library and this will make me stop in more often to see if I'm having a lucky day. If I don't find the movie I want on the Lucky Day shelf I'll wait my turn for my free movie or pay the $1 rental fee at Redbox. Thanks for all that you do and remanining hopeful despite budget cuts, layoffs and reduced hours.

I really like this program!! Got the Lorax recently, and was so glad to get a bonus surprise for the day. I think that it's definitely a fair program, because if you want a book enough to wait in line for it, then you should be happy when yo randomly find it, and be just as happy for others. I think if you're upset because someone else got it first, yo should just remember that you'll get it too soon!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bethany said, on Aug. 20 at 10:45AM
Thanks, LL and Luisa! Hopefully, you're lucky streak continues!

I am utterly confused as to why the library thinks they need more foot traffic. Due to reduced hours of operation the library I frequent is ALWAYS packed. I am happy to wait in line for something I want to read or watch. (and I do) Fair is fair. Not one person should be put in front of another.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Madlibz said, on Aug. 20 at 1:55PM
Still love this idea. Although I haven't found anything else that I want on the lucky day shelf, I find I go into the library more often and browse. I don't resent those that have a lucky day, even if I'm on the wait list for the item they picked up. At least now I might have a chance of getting it in the next few weeks instead of the next few months. Keep it up!

nycgirl said, on Aug. 21 at 5:08PM
Is there any way to be able to check before you go to the library to see if a title is on the lucky day table? Also movies usually release on tuesdays, will those titles be available on the day they come out?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bethany said, on Aug. 22 at 12:18PM
Hi teri, The goal of Lucky Day isn’t to bring more people into the library, but to meet the increasing demand for popular materials we’re experiencing. If this happens to create more awareness of JCPL and brings more people in, that’s a great benefit! The Lucky Day items are separate from the main collection and we still purchase additional materials for the regular collection when the holds queue reaches a certain point compared to the number of titles available. We hope you’ll check out the Lucky Day area at your local library!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bethany said, on Aug. 22 at 12:20PM
Thanks, Madlibz! Make sure you check the Lucky Day area often as new items can appear everyday!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bethany said, on Aug. 22 at 4:05PM
nycgirl, yes, you can tell if a Lucky Day item is available at a library before you go in. As you’re searching the catalog, if an item has LUCKY DAY as the call number, it is available at the designated library (but get there fast – there’s no guarantee it will still be there by the time you arrive!). As for movies being available on their scheduled release date, in general, we do have them out that same day. There are some titles that we can’t get because there is a 30-45 day delay from the date it goes on sale for the public. Also, if we get defective merchandise that can also affect when the DVDs are available. The best way to know when we’ll have a movie and when it will be available is to check the catalog.

It's official. I am in love with Lucky Day. And I totally get both sides of the debate, but as someone who's been in the long line of holds, Lucky Day is a huge save. And, I immediately cancel my holds when I score big. Check it out folks, because you never know if it's going to be your "Lucky Day." Plus our libraries need the foot traffic. Njoy!!!

AJ said, on Aug. 28 at 4:48PM
Hello again, I wanted to correct my grammar to say "who has been" in the long line of holds. Silly, I know, but I wanted to make it right. Meanwhile, Lucky Day is still fun, so do check it out inside your local library. I scored two books, Wild and Gone Girl, from my holds, yesterday. Thanks!

Bethany said, on Aug. 29 at 12:59PM
The Lucky Day items are in different locations at each library, but are prominently displayed – just look for the ladybug! The Lucky Day collection does not include books that aren’t released to the public, it’s popular items that are already out. We’re so glad to hear folks are liking Lucky Day – keep on looking, you never know what you might discover. P.S. AJ, proper grammar is underrated these days :)

Excellent idea! Had Lee Child new book on hold for months, found it on Lucky Day shelf and knew immediately - was great deal. As many books available at any time is the ideal. Holds are a great system but the faster I can get a book the more I can read. It is very fair and has my vote. As they say, "So many books, so little time."

I got a copy of a DVD with Lucky Day and I also had it on hold. The hold did not go off when I checked out the lucky day and when I called the Library they told me that it does not happen automatically. That means that unless a hold is cancelled by a patron, the hold list never gets shorter and the rest of us who have holds must wait even longer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bethany said, on Sep. 19 at 1:19PM
Hi Terry - the concept of the Lucky Day collection is to get popular materials into patron's hands faster because the demand for these items is continually growing. If you have any other questions, let us know! In the meantime, we hope you stop by the Lucky Day shelves at your library too see what might be there for you!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bethany said, on Sep. 19 at 1:21PM
It is true that the current system we have doesn't automatically remove an item from your holds list when you check out that same thing through Lucky Day. We were hoping to have this function available, but it didn't work out. Hopefully, that will happen someday soon! In the meantime, we're encouraging all patrons to remove an item from your holds list if you've got it as a Lucky Day item.

Oh Happy Day!!! I scored the most incredibly funny book ever on the Lucky Day table. It's called "Where'd You Go, Bernadette?" by Maria Semple. What a nice surprise and find. This book is most enjoyable. I mean "laugh out loud" funny. I have considered an e-reader, but I cannot give up my hardcover books. What a feeling to hold one in your hand. No offense e-readers. I love you too. (smiles) Many thanks to the library for bringing this joy to the table. I appreciate you. ~Booklover

Those who think Lucky Day is "unfair" aren't understanding the concept. I LOVE Lucky Day. I was so very excited to grab "The Scorch Trials". The list is very long, and it only took me 2 days to read it, so I returned promptly to allow someone else have a lucky too. Now I'm not on the list for the book and others will get it sooner. I think it is a wonderful idea and making the items non-renewable evens out the "fairness" I think. You can borrow, but finish quickly because others are waiting!

I've read through every post on this blog and if I understand correctly, the lucky day collection has no impact on the same titles in the regular collection. For those who remove their holds once they find the item in the lucky day collection, it might make more sense to freeze your hold, but keep the item on hold. That way the ratio of items to holds will remain high and perhaps initiate the purchase of additional copies thus shortening the holds queue for everyone on that particular item. Even if a patron's hold falls on an item they've already accessed through lucky day it is highly likely that will cancel their hold once they receive the email notification, or simply not pick up the held item and it will fall off the hold shelf when the pickup time has expired.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bethany said, on Dec. 12 at 2:21PM
Thanks for the comment, GERN. You're right, the Lucky Day items do not impact the number of copies available that are on hold. We've purchased additional copies of our most popular materials for Lucky Day. We do encourage patrons who find a Lucky Day item that they've had on hold to remove the item from their list so others can access the materials faster.

I think Lucky Day is really creative. It was so much fun to walk in and "get Lucky". Let's face it that's life. We all get cool breaks everyonce in a while, at such a fussy institution as a library isn't it nifty that there can be spontenaity and surprise. I told my high schoolers about it and two of them found books on Lucky Day they were hoping to read. I commend your creativity and excellence.

I was in the library today and they had 'Rock of Ages' on the Lucky Day Shelf and I think it's a good idea ~ The Denver Library does it without a name ~ they just have a certain number of copies that CANNOT be placed on hold from the beginning so they always go to the shelf. This system allows for everyone to have an opportunity to view movies and NOT just people who take the initiative or have the know how to place holds... A lot of patrons dont use the hold option.

Do some research on the psychology of queuing (ie studies/articles by Davie Maister). Millions of dollars have been spent by countless corporations proving that "Unfair Waits Are Longer than Equitable Waits." OF COURSE those who haven't been waiting are thrilled with this system. It's obvious those who frequent the library, are attentive to the hold system and are patiently waiting are deemed irrelevant by those who thought & continue to believe that this system was/is a good idea. Why would you do something that angers and frustrates those who are most involved in following library procedures?

When we were initially thinking of starting a Lucky Day collection, we looked at a number of issues, including fairness. Patrons who have had items on hold have sometimes received them faster by snagging a Lucky Day item, a bit like winning a library version of the lottery. We’ve also found that these patrons will then cancel their hold, thereby shortening the wait for others in the queue. The overwhelming feedback from patrons has been positive for Lucky Day. We hope you’ll give the area a look at your local library, you never know what you may stumble upon.

Two of my friends just finished reading Gone Girl and I was just about to request this item based on their feedback, and I found it instead on the Lucky Day table last night at Belmar!!!!! I also must add that every time we are at the library, I notice a lot of people going straight to the Lucky Day table, there is a reason for this!!! it is because patrons enjoy it and it is a GREAT idea!!!! Thank you for Lucky Day!!!

this is a lot like winning the lottery, and what is wrong with that? All of the negative comments on here just amaze me, and kudos to everyone who has provided positive feedback on this program!!!

As a librarian, I love this concept! Whoever came up with this idea should be promoted. I've had several successes with the Lucky Day table, and I'm happy to finish what I find and get it back to the library so someone else can also be fortunate. Kudos, JeffCo Library!
