Day Camp a success!

The Brillion Library hosted its first annual day camp the week of July 20-23rd.  19 youth in grades 3-6 participated in this event that took place during the afternoons.  Youth participated in a variety of activities including a writing seminar led by Chris Havel of the Brillion News, a scrapbooking session taught by Heather Ponschock, Wii gaming, poetry reading, creating art and other group activities.

Scrapbooking seemed to be the most popular activity with the writer's workshop second.  Youth enjoyed water balloon games and did a wonderful job reading poetry.  Wii gaming was going well until the speakers on the system decided not to work and it is pretty hard to do guitar hero without sound. Oh well that is just one of the pitfalls of technology.

Campers in attendance decided that they would like to attend camp again and so the Brillion Library is already planning next summer's camp.  Water is the focus of the 2010 summer reading program with "Make a Splash" as the theme.  We are already thinking of some great activities and sessions to put into our camp.  if you have any great ideas, let us know.

In 2010, the library is trying to focus on activities for the 'tween" group that will bring them into the library and help these youth continue to develop their reading skills.  The success of the Day Camp, has given us at least one idea to follow in 2010.  Let me know if you have any other great ideas to try.

Mel's Garden becomes a reality!

Anyone who walks or drives by the Library on Main Street, or enters the library from the Main Street entrance, will notice a beautiful garden around the community sign. The garden called “Mel’s Garden” was created in memory of Mel Marx. Henrietta and Aurora Marx donated money to the library in memory of what would have been Mel’s 75th Birthday. The Library decided to create a garden around the sign with the donation. The garden ended up becoming a true community garden with most of the materials, and work being done by volunteers.

Jane Kopidlansky was instrumental in making the garden a reality. Jane took a brief plan created by Dorene Schuster of Greenleaf Landscape and expanded it to create a garden in an area that Department of Public Works employees had filled in. She arranged and planted the plants, added mulch, created a path and contacted individuals to help with the project, Most of the plants and materials used were donated by individuals and businesses. Eventually a brick path will line the walking path and edges and a stone engraved with “Mel’s Garden” will be added to the beautiful, fragrant garden, that will bloom most of the year.

Jane was assisted by volunteers and used donations of materials and plants to create the garden. Here is a list of contributors to the project: Kathy Lane, Peace Church, Mary Maciejewski, Dottie Umbehaun, Schroth’s Floral, Carol Pritzl, Carol Burich, Julaine Huth, Mary Ariens, Ken and Dorene Schuster, Rob Schroth, Henrietta Marx, Jolene Gerhartz, Brendan Daun,  4X Concrete, and Jane Kopidlansky.

The garden is being maintained by Jane and some of her friends. It is wonderful to see this spirit of volunteerism in the community. The Library thanks her and all of those who contributed to make this garden a success. From digging a path, to planting, to watering and weeding the plants, to donating rocks, gravel, limestone or bricks, the Brillion Library thanks you for your assistance in making Mel’s Garden a reality.

Henna anyone?

The Brillion Public Library is holding a program on Henna art on Wednesday, July 8th from 2-4 p.m.  The program is open to youth 10 and up.  The age limit was lowered after sign ups of teens were low.  Amy Wilde from Castle Art will share her expertise on Henna art.  Amy has made presentations around the area on henna art.  Her presentation will start with  some background and history of  the art. She will then let youth try their hand at applying henna design on a partner.  Henna designs will come off after a while.  We invite you to join us at the Brillion Public Library for this interactive program.
