April endings and May beginnings

The month of April is winding down and with its end also signifying the end of 2 opportunities.  This first is the opportunity to  take the library survey and offer us information to help the library in its future planning.  I can't stress enough how important it is to have this survey filled out.  The survey is brief, but will be giving us a lot of information.  Please take the time and fill out the survey.

The second opportunity ending is for youth 10 and under.  This being the Culver's draw a picture program.  All entries are due back at the Library by 8 p.m. on April 30th.  We have received some really creative pictures already and it would be great to have the windows full of pictures.

With May comes some new beginnings. The Library will be installing a new computer island for 6 of its public computers.  The Library is upgrading the memory on its public access computers to 1 GB, which should speed up the computers.  We have also added Office 07 on 2 of the public computers.  Office 07 includes Word, Power Point, Excel and Publisher.  With these changes, the public should enjoy using the public computers more.

Other new things happening in May are improvements to the Library grounds.  The Friends have adopted the flower bed on the corner of Main and Park Streets.  They plan to plant a flower bed by the new library sign.  They will also be maintaining this corner. The library hopes to being work on Mel's Garden, which is the area around the community sign.  Once this is planted, we are will be looking for a volunteer to maintain it.  We also are looking for someone to maintain the plantings done at the corner of Main and Oak Street.  if you are interested in helping maintain these plantings, let us know.

May will also be the beginning of sign up for a summer of creativity at the Library.  Starting May 18th, people of all ages can sign up for the Library's summer reading programs.  Our theme is "Be creative @your library!"  We will have programs for all ages, including a Day Camp for youth in Grades 3-6.  The camp should be a great opportunity for youth to be creative in a variety of ways.  We have already signed up Chris Havel to teach a session on writing and newspapers.  We may have a session on scrapbooking, dancing, musical instruments, and other creative ventures.  Watch for the summer brochure, which will be coming out in May.

Enjoy the rainy April weather as everybody knows April showers bring---May Flowers!

Celebrate Earth Day!

Today is Earth Day!  Make it a day of new beginnings, a day to think about what we are doing for the earth.  Libraries have always been a part of Earth Day.

Earth Day has always been a special day for me.  24 years ago on Earth Day, I started at the Brillion Library. Each year as I celebrate Earth Day, I also celebrate the opportuhity to serve the Greater community of Brillion.

Over those years the Library has looked at and implemented ways to make the library more energy efficient.  The Internet and email have lessoned our use of paper and have made the spread of information easier.  The Library provides access to materials and information that people do not have to purchase. This saves valuable land fill space.

As you celebrate Earth Day!  Don't forget the role your public library plays in making this a better world for you, your children and grandchildren.  Happy Earth Day!

Calling all youth in grades K-4!

"Spring time" is the theme of the next Library afterschool program.  On Tuesday at 3:30 youth in K-Grade 4 are invited to join us at the Brillion Library for games, a craft and refreshments furnished by the Library Friends.  While the weather may not look very spring-like, the activities will be fresh and new.  Come join us for this monthly program at the Library.  I've heard that bubble design and bubble blowing are to be a part of the program and the Friends have some delicious bars, cookies and muffins made.  Hope to see all of you on Tuesday at the Library.

Have you filled out our survey?

The Brillion Library needs your input on the library and its future.  The Library has created a  brief online survey that can be accessed on the Library website.  The survey asks you to rate on a scale of 1- 5 various library offerings and to comment on any concerns about the library.  Won't you take a few minutes to offer your opinions?   So far only 17 people have responded to the survey in the 3 weeks that the survey has been live.  We need more input that this for our future planning.    Please take a few minutes and let us know how you feel.  Thanks!

Chris Havel shines in Briliion Library Presentation

Last evening the Brilion Library Friends sponsored author Chris Havel in a presentation at the Library.  His presentation truly shined.  He kept the small audience interested for the full hour he talked.  He talked of the need to read and about the lost art of listening that is so missing in today's communication rich society.  He talked about his work as editor of the Brilion News and his effort to make it a true community paper.  His presentation ended with a look at the Green Bay Packers and the books he has written about them.  His storytelling truly inspired the audience.  For all of those who attended, I sure they felt as I did that this was a great way to spend a Spring evening.  He ended his performance by donating a copy of his book "A year of champions:   The 1996 Green Bay Packers" to the Library.  Delicious refreshments were served by the Friends.

Welcome to our blog

Hello all,

This is the birth of the Brillion Public Library's official Blog. This being National Library Week, the Library is hopping with exciting events.  Wednesday evening, author Chris Havel will be presenting  "Authoring a book, how to make it successful."  He is the coauthor of 2 books on Brett Favre and a third on the Green Bay Packers.  A signing reception complete with refreshments will follow his presentation.  It looks to be an interesting program. On Thursday, the Library is offering Wii gaming from 4-6.  If you have never had the opportunity to try the Wii system, this is your chance.  My son and his family purchased a system when they came out and I have had the opportunity to play a number of different games.  It is really fun and it does imitate the real game. Believe it or not I bowl as bad on the Wii as on the alley.
