The 2009 Manitowoc-Calumet Library System Battle of the Books have made their selections. The selected books are: “Oddest of All” by Bruce Coville; “Graveyard Book” by Neil Gaiman; “The Trouble begins at 8: A life of Mark Twain in the Wild, Wild West” by Sid Fleischman; “Generation dead” by Daniel Waters; “The Plain Janes” by Cecil Castellucci and Jim Rugg; “Traitor” by Gundrun Pausewang; “Notes from the midnight driver” by Jordan Sonnenblick; and “Emperors of the ice: a true story of disaster and survival in the Antarctic” by Richard Farr. The selections involve a variety of books in different genres. There should be something for every reader to pick from.
We are inviting youth in grades 7-12 to come and be a part of the Battle. What does the Battle consist of? A team of teens competing as a group on their knowledge of the 8 selected books. The teens have the summer to read and know the books. We have 3 knowledgeable and helpful coaches who will meet with the team and help prepare them for Battle. The Battle will take place on Wednesday, September 9th at 6:30 at the Conference Center at Silver Lake College. The Battle is followed by an Awards ceremony and a pizza party for the members participating. All team members receive a Battle t-shirt for participating.
Brillion has won the Battle twice and has their name on the traveling trophy. Wouldn't a third win be nice? If you enjoy reading and would like to be a part of this year's team, email me at cmoede@esls.lib.wi.us and let me know of your interest. Come be a part of the Battle of the Books 2009!
