WAPL Conference Delivers

I had the opportunity to attend the WAPL Conference held at the Wilderness Resort in the Wisconsin Dells last week.  This conference held in the spring is a wonderful opportunity for librarians and trustees to network and to learn what is new in the library world.  Library directors are required by State Law to be certified and as a part of this certification are required to engage in continuing education for recertification.  This conference is one way of learning.

The conference opened with a keynote by Emily Sheketoff of the Washington office of the ALA.  Emily talked about getting access to our elected officials, and about stimulus package programs that libraries can benefit from.  She talked about how one person can make a difference in a legislator's decision.  She also said that most elected officials are only there to get reelected.  She talked about what works when contacting an official. Mail is the worst way to contact an official in that it takes extra time because of the sorting process for Washington officials.

Wiscat is the state database that Brillion is a part of and uses for Interlibrary Loan.  I attended a session that focused on the updates that have been made to the software.  One of the most notable is the ability to search periodicals for articles.  The session also focused on allowing patrons to place their own requests.  Brillion would like to do this in the coming year.

The luncheon featured authors Lisa Kivirist and John Ivanko.  This couple launched their own enterprise, Inn Serendipity, which is completely powered by the wind and sun.  Their speech was on people becoming more green, more self sustaining and more entrepreneurial in their lives.  The "ecopreneurship" concept is catching on with people who now realize that money isn't the most important thing in life. Libraries are a big part of this movement in that they serve as a gathering point in a community and a place for people to get information on changing their lives.   The library will be adding some of this couples books on these concepts.

Googlicious was a session that focused on many of the new features of the already powerful search engine Google.  Google now allows people to create thier own customized google page through iGoogle that has lots of unique features.  Other new google tools included Google reader, google health, google calendar, google docs,, google street view and more were shown to the group. Google books now allows you to search some magazines as well.  Google has truly become a great starting point on the Internet.

Developing Online Local History Resources for your library featured the Oshkosh Public Library and their project, Picture Oshkosh.  The public helped the library create a database of photos on the history of Oshkosh.  The process was described and some of the photos were shown.  This would be a neat project for  Brillion to consider doing.

Space needs for public libraries in the 21st Century dealt with the new publication on accessing library space needs that is being developed by Anders Dahlgren.  One of the unique features is an online spread sheet that can calculate area based on input.  While the Brillion Library isn't in a space crunch, things do change and sometimes moving things around in an  existing building might give us the space we need.  Being aware of available resources is a great planning tool.

EXCELlent!!! top five lists of ways to create great youth services @ your library features a panel of 4 library directors who listed their 5 top ways and talked about how to achieve them.  They all stressed the importance of youth programs in a library to the overall mission of the Library.

The conference concluded with author Terese Allen who writes about region
