The Fault In Our Stars by John Green

Rating: Excellent! (5)

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green

This week I read The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. I was very excited when I read this just because I loved his other books, and I know he is a great author. The Fault in Our Stars is about Hazel, a girl struggling with cancer. Her mom is worried about her (depression is a side effect of dying Hazel explained) so every week, Hazel visits "the literal heart of Jesus" to meet with other teens battling various sicknesses. One day Augustus Waters shows up (he is there supporting a friend), and so they begin their not-so-subtle relationship. Though The Fault in Our stars tells the story of Hazel and Agustus's relationship, but also so much more. John Green writes about the meaning of life and the immediacy of just knowing whats out there. I recomend everyone read this, it had me laughing and crying, and wishing it wouldn't end, and isn't that what a good book is?

The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger by Stephen King

Rating: Excellent! (5)

The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger by Stephen King

The gunslinger by Stephen King is an amazing book with bottomless excitement and nonstop enjoyment. The book uses a very unique writing style where when you start the book you know nothing and gain information by memories from the past throughout the book. The book is very descriptive so it is easy to be able to picture everything just as the author imagines it should be. The book is about Roland, he is a gunslinger, the last of his kind. Set in a post-apocolyptic mid western setting he sets off for an amazing journey across the desert. This book is unlike any other i have ever read and is now one of my favorite books. Currently there are seven books in the dark towers series, this being the first, and it is very excited that I can have a fun long lasting series that I will enjoy for a long time. I highly recommend this book.

Finnikin Of The Rock by Melina Marchetta

Rating: Good (4)

Finnikin Of The Rock by Melina Marchetta

Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta is one of the more bizarre fantasy novels I've read. Instead of building a world and then telling the reader about it, Marchetta merely puts the information out there and leaves it for the reader to make the connections. It tells the story of Finnikin, a young man who was forced to leave his homeland of Lumatere after the royal family was assassinated and the country sealed off to the outside world. Finnikin has been travelling with Sir Tullus, the King's first man (whatever that means), helping Lumateran refugees find places to settle, but he meets a girl named Evanjalin who says she knows how to open the kingdom and find the lost prince. What follows is a rambling adventure of the small group tracking down everyone of importance to the kingdom so they can find the heir. The romance in it is touching, if a bit sudden, and the overall book is incredibly entertaining. I'd recommend it to any medieval or fantasy lover in middle school on up.

The Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope

Rating: Excellent! (5)

The Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope

Kate does not see herself as a romantic young lady in waiting of Princess Elizabeth. Instead, she handles her banishment to the Perilous Guard calmly, never suspecting how much she will be tested, and how much like a story book her life will become. She becomes entangled in an ancient family's partnership with the last druidic worshipers. After becoming a slave of The Lady, the coldly beautiful high priestess, Kate is the only chance her friend Christopher and all other future sacrifices have of living. A thrilling, adventure filled, and romantic story with a heroine brim-full of practicality.

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green

Rating: Excellent! (5)

The Fault In Our Stars by John Green

The Fault in Our Stars is perhaps John Green's greatest work to date. Hilarious and heartbreaking, it examines both the endlessness of oblivion and the temporariness of forever, the depth of cynicism and the consoling power of hope. The main character, Hazel, is a teenage girl who would never say that she is fighting cancer, because there is no fight if the winner is already determined. Hazel gets involved in as few relationships as possible, because she wants to minimize the damage that she knows is coming with the inevitable victory of her disease. But then she meets Augustus, a fellow "Cancer Kid"?. With the help of him, family, friends, and the occasional reclusive, alcoholic author, Hazel finds that just because life is temporary, does not mean that it is meaningless. Love and tragedy abound in this beautifully-written masterpiece examining not the why of everything, but the why not?

The Fault in Our Stars is dedicated to Esther Earl, a friend of the author who died of cancer last year. Inspired by Esther, her family has founded a nonprofit organization called This Star Won't Go Out in her memory. All proceeds go to helping the families of cancer victims. Learn more at tswgo.com. John Green, along with his brother, Hank, make up the Vlogbrothers on Youtube. They are the creators of Brotherhood 2.0, an immensely popular video project. Jane by April Lindner

Rating: Just Okay (3)

Jane by April Lindner

Jane by April Lindner is essentially an updated version of the classic novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. It tells the story of Jane, a young woman who has recently lost her parents and is forced to drop out of college and become a nanny. She ends up taking a job at Thornfield Park for Nico Rathburn, a rock star about to stage his comeback tour, and his young daughter Maddy. The book is full of romance and drama, but it also has a hint of mystery to it. It is not a good substitute for the original, but mainly serves as an introduction. This novel contains some adult language and situations, so it might not be appropriate for younger age groups.
