An Aquarium for Casey!
Congratulations to Casey C., the winner of the aquarium kit donated by Ace Hardware in Weston.  Casey was one of over 1300 reading club participants at the Wausau Headquarters Library.  His ticket was drawn from tickets from all the library locations in Marathon County, so he is a very lucky boy!

Where is the Bathtub?

I have had this question from many children in the last couple weeks.  So--here it is--sitting in the library's garage, in the middle of a much-needed makeover.  Kitty has completed the painting (look at the snazzy gold feet!), and Olson Carpet One will soon be replacing the old, worn carpet.  Our thanks to Christine Bremer-Zoromski, who is funding the tub's makeover.

What's that in the tub?  All the Summer Library Program reading tickets from throughout the county, waiting for the drawing of the grand prize.  Wow, what a lot of reading our customers did this summer!

And the Grand Prize winner is...
...stay tuned...

Challenging Kids, Challenged Teachers
September means back to school with both new challenges and exciting opportunities for students, their teachers and families. However, according to mothers and authors  Leslie E. Packer, Ph.D. and Sheryl K. Pruitt, M.Ed., ET/P, who wrote Challenging Kids, Challenged Teachers (now in our collection),  for those children diagnosed with multiple neurological disorders,  school-related problems increase exponentially.

If your child or student has been diagnosed with overlapping disorders such as Asperger's Syndrome, Sleep Deprivation, Tourette Syndrome, Attention Deficit Disorder and Anxiety Disorder, for example, this book will help you  to move forward with greater understanding.  The authors make sense of the alphabet soup of confusing ACRONYMS; teach how to reframe our thinking, language, parenting and teaching skills as we react to unintentional misbehaviors and suggest "sanity-saving premises" that take us from chaos to awareness.

The greatest portion of the book is devoted to providing practical tools and strategies for teachers, parents and care-givers in areas of math, behavior modification, homework and motivation.

Find it in our Library Catalog (V-Cat):

Time is Running Out for Reading Tickets!
It's not too late to turn in a ticket for the summer reading program--but time is running out soon!  All tickets must be turned in by 1:00 this Saturday, August 21 to be included in the prize drawings.

We have had a record number of participants at the library in Wausau.  Thank you for making this our best summer ever!

Pool Party!

I can't think of a better way to wrap up our "Make a Splash" summer reading program than with a pool party on one of the hottest days of the year!

The pool party will be held Tuesday, August 10 at Memorial Park pool in Wausau. Kids received a free family admission pass in their "goody bags" when they turned in their first completed reading ticket.  Teens also received free admission with their first completed reading ticket.  These admission passes may be used for Memorial Park Pool anytime between 1:00 and 7:50 pm Tuesday.  You can also show your library card for free admission that day.

Children's craft activities will be featured from 1:00 to 3:00.  I also have a few prizes to give away, so the first 50 or so children who come up to me (in my red T-shirt) and tell me the summer theme will receive a small prize.

Lawn games and other activities for teens will be featured after 6:00.  Come and join the splashy fun!

Understanding Biomass Energy
In early 2010, WE Energies applied to build a Biomass facility in Rothschild, which had a lot of our community-members wondering "What the heck is Biomass?" ... and perhaps more importantly "How will this affect us?" Fortunately, the Library has a number of resources that can help you make sense of it all, plus a few links that will allow you to communicate your opinions to the powers that be.
  • MCPL | Books about Biomass: http://bit.ly/drybUv
(for help understanding the science and history of biomass)

  • WE Energies | Biomass Energy Project: http://bit.ly/1B8pjF
(from the WE Energies website; includes fact summaries and all application materials pertaining to the proposed facility; a printed copy of these materials is available for public viewing at MCPL Wausau)

  • National Renewable Energy Laboratory | Biomass Basics: http://bit.ly/asOZfy
(general information about biomass from the U.S. Dept. of Energy)

  • Public Service Commission of Wisconsin | Submit Your Comments: http://bit.ly/do0pKf
(submit your comments about the proposed biomass facility; the "comment period" ends 12/31/10, so you still have time to let your opinions be heard!)
