Download e-Books? Please Take a Short Survey
Do you download e-books or digital audiobooks? If so, please consider taking a short survey from the Wisconsin Public Library Consortium (WPLC) about the digital collections.

The WPLC was formed in 2001, and its main service is the Wisconsin Digital Library. This digital catalog is utilized by Marathon County Public Library and other Wisconsin public libraries to offer e-books and digital audio books to patrons.

This short survey will help WPLC develop its digital collections so it is as relevant as possible to library patrons.

Access the survey here.

Curious about borrowing e-books or any other digital materials from the library? Visit our Wisconsin Digital Library page for information on borrowing materials, frequently asked questions, and more.

OverDrive's Big Library Read: October 13-28, 2014
Check out OverDrive’s Big Library Read, which offers community-wide access to a YA title during October 13-28, 2014. During this special event, all card holders can simply download “Anatomy of A Misfit" by Andrea Portes from OverDrive. Since OverDrive is offering simultaneous use for this title during October 13-28, the title is available right away, with no waiting on hold for the next copy. The title expires at the end of the lending period for each user, not the end of the program.

Synopsis: “Anika is the third most popular girl in her high school–despite feeling she doesn’t fit in with the popular crowd in her small Nebraskan town. To maintain her social status, Anika does whatever Becky Vilhauser (first most popular girl in school) tells her to do. But when loner Logan McDonough returns from summer vacation hotter, and more mysterious than ever, Anika has a hard time staying away–even when Becky forbids her to date him. Anika’s glimpse into Logan’s troubled home life only draws her closer, but despite her blossoming feelings, Anika breaks up with him. In an emotionally devastating ending, Anika is left in the wake of tragedy, which leaves her with the revelation that we have only one chance to be true to ourselves, and nothing is more important than listening to your own heart.”

JUNE 2, 2014
Overdrive's Big Library Read: June 3-18

Looking for a new book to read on your Kindle or Nook for June? Check out Overdrive’s Big Library Read, which offers community-wide access to a new mystery during June 3-18, 2014. During this special event, all card holders can simply download  "A Pedigree to Die For, Melanie Travis Mystery Series, Book 1 " by Laurien Berenson from Overdrive. Since Overdrive is offering simultaneous use for this title during June 3-18, the title is available right away, with no waiting on hold for the next copy. The title expires at the end of the lending period for each user, not the end of the program.

Publisher’s description of "A Pedigree to Die For": "The apparent heart attack that killed kennel owner Max Turnbull has left seven pups in mourning, and his wife Peg suspecting foul play. But the only evidence is their missing prize pooch—a pedigreed poodle named Beau.

Enter Melanie Travis. With her young son happily ensconced in day damp, the thirty-something teacher and single mother is talked into investigating her uncle's death—unofficially, of course. Posing as a poodle breeder in search of the perfect stud, Melanie hounds Connecticut's elite canine competitions, and finds an ally in fellow breeder Sam Driver. But her affection cools when she's put on the scent of Sam's questionable past...and hot on the trail of a poodle-hating neighbor and one elusive murderer who isn't ready to come to heel.  For, as Melanie soon discovers, in a championship dog-eat-dog world, the instinct for survival, and winning, can prove fatal."

Sync offers free YA audiobook downloads this summer
Dreading assigned summer reading?  Have to spend hours in the car with your annoying younger siblings?  Mowing thousands of lawns this summer?  I may have a solution as close as your headphones and smartphone.  As I was scrolling around the internet this week, I discovered that Sync, sponsored by AudioFile Magazine is giving away free young adult audio books paired with either a classic or required reading book.  Sync is powered by Overdrive, so you will need to make sure that you have Overdrive downloaded to your computer, tablet or device. (Get Overdrive from your preferred app store or here.

The files are in MP3 format and each pair is available for one week only, but the files are yours to keep. You can even sign up for email notifications or text alerts when new files become available.  The list has a lot of great reading (listening?) opportunities.  Some of the title pairings coming up include “Confessions of a Murder Suspect” by James Patterson with Agatha Christie’s “Murder at the Vicarage,” (May 29-June 4) “Code Name Verity,” a Printz honor book about a British spy shot down over occupied France paired with “The Hiding Place,” a novel about a Dutch family sent to a concentration camp for hiding Jews (June 12-June 18), and “Forgive Me Leonard Peacock,” about a young man planning a school shooting with “October Mourning:  A Song for Matthew Shepard”(June 26-July 2).   Need to read “The Odyssey” this summer?  Check out the audio book of “Torn from Troy,” (July 3-9) about Odysseus’s Trojan slave.   Find yourself missing Anne and Prince Edward Island?  “Anne of Green Gables” is available June 19-25. Both Sherlock Holmes and Dr Jekyll (or is that Mr. Hyde?) are available at the end of July.  If you miss one, you can still listen to it via Soundcloud, but you won’t be able to download it, and, sadly, you can’t get files from previous summers.  Check it out the schedule and good luck with your assigned summer reading!

MCPL launching Digital Classics Book Club

See classic literature in a new light by getting some Tolkien on your tablet, some digital Dickens or a little Kafka on your Kindle, with the Marathon County Public Library’s new Digital Classics Book Club.

Each month, the group picks a new classic available free and without wait through the library’s Overdrive system here and here. Instead of a monthly gathering, members post their thoughts on MCPL’s Goodreads page (also free) as the pages turn. Need a hand getting started? Call or stop by the Wausau Headquarters' reference desk any time.

The club begins in May with "Babbitt," Sinclair Lewis' scathing critique of the American Dream, told through the eyes of his disillusioned protagonist, George F. Babbitt.

(Still prefer books in print? You're still welcome in the classics club, and we have other clubs at each MCPL location. Or, talk to us about starting your own!)

For more information, call 715-261-7234 or email bookclub @

NOOK makes borrowing library e-books even easier!
Finally, owners of NOOK Color, NOOK HD and NOOK Tablet are able to download e-books and audio books directly onto their e-readers using the free OverDrive Media Console app!

This app bypasses the need to first download these files onto a computer and upload them to an e-reader using a USB cord, making these e-readers an ideal stand-alone solutions for accessing library books on the go.

This app may be found by searching for "OverDrive Media Console" in the NOOK Store from these devices.
Once it is installed, open the app and choose the "Get Books" option. Next, choose your library ("Marathon County Public Library" or "Wisconsin Public Library Consortium") and input your 14-digit library barcode number. When appropirate, the app will ask for your Adobe ID. (If you don't have one yet, you will be given the option to create one.) After that, you will be free to browse and download e-books and audiobooks as you please!

The OverDrive app also is available for accessing library materials on many Android and Apple iOS-based smart phones and tablets. For a complete list of compatible devices, visit
