WANTED: HISTORY BUFFS AND FUN-LOVERS TO COMPETE IN NIGHT AT THE LIBRARY COMMUNITY TREASURE HUNT
Looking for all would-be explorers, adventurers, promising Indiana Jones-types, and Nicholas Cage wannabes.

The Night at the Library Community Treasure Hunt hosted by the Maury County Public Library will be held on Saturday, October 22 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.  This one-of-a-kind event will take participating scavenger hunt teams on a whirlwind tour of local museums, United States history, and literary adventures.

Home base for the scavenger hunt will be the Maury County Public Library.  Teams of up to 4 participants will start their adventure at the library, where they will receive a treasure hunt map along with a scavenger hunt list of questions and activities.  At 6:30 p.m., explorers will venture out to sites within walking distance of the library.  Participating sites include the James K. Polk Home, Amuse’um Children’s Museum, and The Castle.  Along their adventure, participants will encounter various historical and literary figures, including Abraham Lincoln and Dragging Canoe (Cherokee warrior).   “We are very proud to have such an outstanding group of historical interpreters participate in this event,” explains event coordinator, Derek Cameron.  “There’s a little bit of everything and everyone in this event; costumed performers will represent the Colonial era, the Regency Era and Jane Austen, all the way through the Civil War and beyond.”

“Participating teams can expect to have a lot of fun with this event!  They will be asked to find the answers to clues, locate artifacts, sing historical songs, and perhaps even create their own works of art.  It’s an event for the whole family that will test the wits and historical and literary knowledge of participating teams” explains event co-coordinator and Children’s Librarian, Mecca Caron.  “Due to funding through a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission and a great group of community sponsors including Maury Regional Medical Center, Parks Motors, Inc., Holland’s Pharmacy, M&M Automotive, The Print Stop, Expert Tire, and Westbury House on the Square, we will be offering more than $300 in cash and prizes to the top three teams completing the treasure hunt.

The treasure hunt competition is now accepting registrations for teams of up to 4 people.  Every team must include at least one adult (21 or over) and all ages are encouraged to participate.  Registration forms can be picked-up at the Maury County Public Library located at 211 W. 8thStreet, Columbia or downloaded from the library’s website at www.maurycountylibrary.org.  A pre-registration fee of just $10 per team must be received by Saturday, October 1, 2011.  After October 1, registration will be $20 per team.    For more information, please call the library at 931.375.6507 or email the coordinator at mcaron@maurycounty-tn.gov.
