Library News

We have still a pair of new eye glasses that were found in the new book area of our library. The frame is brown in color and they have an oval shape to them. They also have the integrated spring hinge. They have been here now for a couple of months. We have hope that they will be claimed and can be returned to their rightful owner, who I'm sure has noticed that they have been missing but just can't remember where they have laid them. If you yourself have lost a pair of eyeglasses, or know of someone who has, be sure that they check here at the library. We have this fabulous pair here waiting for a face to live on again! October 5-11, 2008 is Fire Prevention Week. There are many wonderful websites, books, etc. available to give you wonderful information about fire safety and how to keep you and your loved ones safe. I also know that many local fire departments would be able to answer your fire questions also. Please take advantage of these wonderful sources. It's always better to be safe than sorry.
The United States has one of the highest fire death and injury rates in the world. Fire -- in the form of flames and smoke -- is the second leading cause of accidental death in the home.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 4,000 people die each year in home fires. Every year, there are more than 500,000 residential fires serious enough to be reported to fire departments. More than 90 percent of residential fire deaths and injuries result from fires in one and two family houses and apartments. Property losses exceed 4 billion dollars annually, and the long term emotional damage to victims and their loved ones is incalculable.
Are you prepared if there is a fire in your home?
Sure, you probably have smoke detectors, but do you check them regularly and change the batteries at least twice a year?
Do you have a fire escape plan to make sure that everyone gets out of the house safely? If you do have a home fire escape plan, do you practice it at least twice a year?
Our four step plan can help to make sure that your family is safe from fires...
Step 1 - Use Smoke Alarms as an Early Warning System so that your family has time to escape a fire.
Step 2 - Have a Home Fire Escape Plan to get your family out of your home if there is a fire.
Step 3 - Practice your fire escape plan with Home Fire Drills at least twice a year.
Step 4 - Follow recommendations from a safety guide to spot possible fire safety problems which may be present in your home: By Vincent Iannelli, M.D.
I'd like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to those members on the fire departments, police force, EMT's, etc. who give their lives everyday in our neighborhoods to serve and protect our communities. They risk their lives unselfishly for others. They really are our heroes! A big thank you to our military who protect us from afar.
