Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie news

Most of you have probably heard that the movie planned for the final installment in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,  will be broken down into two separate films.

I think this is particularly interesting, since during our multiple sessions of book discussions about the concluding book in J.K. Rowling's famous series, the overwhelming conclusion was that she should have actually had EIGHT books in the series. Most of the readers who attended these discussions felt that there was just too many loose ends, and too many new ideas introduced to do all of these things (and the characters) justice in a single book.

What do you think?

For Twilight fans...

Twilight series author Stephanie Meyer has posted the first chapter of the story from Edward's point of view (instead of Bella's). She hopes to someday publish the novel Midnight Sun, which will tell his story in its entirety.

Meanwhile, she is hard at work on the fourth in the series, Breaking Dawn, which is tentatively scheduled to be published Fall, 2008.

Also, just FYI in Twilight movie news, a publicized open casting call went out January 18th for the actor who will play Jacob Black.

Twilight by Stephanie Meyer

Having noticed how popular the series by Stephenie Meyer--beginning with Twilight--has become, I took home the book last week. Sometimes when something is really popular with a lot of people, I get this sort of rebellious attitude about liking it...and when I first started reading Twilight, I thought, "What's the big deal about this book?"

I had read three chapters and set it aside for a few days, and then yesterday picked it up....and ended up not being able to put it down for 4-5 hours until I finished it!

Twilight tells the story of Bella, who moves to a small town in Washington state, and meets a very unusual boy, Edward Cullen. While you know, from the book's jacket and hype that Edward is a vampire, the book is still really suspenseful as you wait for her to find out....and see how this will affect her.

One of the great strengths of this novel is the author's ability to heighten the romantic tension throughout the book...while still maintaining an innocence true to Bella's age and experience.

Twilight--which is followed by New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn (which won't be out until at least the fall of 2008)--is currently being made into a movie. It is hard to imagine characters living up to the level of beauty that the author uses to describe the Cullen family.

Follow-up on LOL Book Club Discussion of Ender's Game

I very much enjoyed our quite spiritied discussions of Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card....it also brought up more questions than answers for me.

One thing mentioned in both A and B lunch periods was the rumor that Michael Jackson owned the movie rights to the novel. I checked on that and I believe that information is going to fall under the realm of "urban legend". The info I could find shows that Fresco Pictures has been working with Card on the screenplay...I couldn't find any potential release dates, or even an indication if the project is moving forward, etc. If you find more info...please post under the comments.

Also, I incorrectly stated that the book Ender's Game was written in 1977. I have since discovered, thanks to our sci-fi guru here at MPL, Kevin Maring, that part of the book was published as a short story in 1977, but that the novel wasn't published until 1986 (when it won the Hugo and Nebula Awards.)

A contested plot point in our discussion seemed to be whether or not (or precisely when) the Buggers connected (via their unique mental form of communication) with Ender and the exact origin/role of the video game he played (the one with the giant) and the subsequent replica land.  I don't think this point was resolved...and wondered, after people had a chance to look back over the book, or think about it more...what do you think?

One thing most of us seemed to agree on was our dislike of the newer cover art (in relationship to the tone/intended audience for the book.)

Eragon (Inheritance series) news

The #3 book by Christopher Paolini to follow Eragon and Eldest is reported to be on schedule for a Fall 2008 release. Many readers are looking forward to this fantasy novel.

Paolini began plotting the Inhertiance series as a 15 year old homeschooled student, orginally envisioning it as a trilogy. However, he recently announced that what he thought would be the final book in the trilogy, will actually need to be told over two more books, resulting in a projected series length of four books.

Eragon was made into a movie in 2006, and is now available on DVD to check out from the public library.

Blood and Chocolate coming out in theaters
The YA novel by Annette Curtis Klause, Blood and Chocolate , is about a romance between a human boy and a beautiful teenage werewolf. Find it on the paperback rack in the YA section of the youth department. While the movie is coming out soon, click here for one review that concludes that you should read the book and skip the movie. Fans of the book, what do you think?

Klause fans might also want to read The Silver Kiss.
